Course Description

The course has been designed for candidates for certification as officers in charge of a navigational watch and for experienced nautical officers and other persons with navigational responsibilities. Those attending the course should therefore have experience in performing chartwork and should be able to practice all usual tasks concerning standard navigational procedures and equipment. They should know about the functions and limitations of other navigational equipment.

Based on the IMO 1.27 model, we have optimised our course so it fulfills the 40-hour requirement whilst also covering additional subjects that we consider pertinent to safe ECDIS operation. Read more about the course module on the course content page.

Teaching Methods

The course is evenly split between presentations to build the foundation of knowledge and practical exercises on actual ECDIS equipment to cement understanding. We hold a wide range of different manufacturer's equipment in our eNavigation Centre including:

  • Transas Navi-Sailor 4000, JRC, OSI ECPINS, Kelvin Hughes Manta Digital, PC Maritime Navmaster, Totem ECDIS and Simrad.

Prerequisites

ECDIS is not aiming to teach trainees to navigate using ECDIS. It is teaching them to use ECDIS in order to navigate safely. Therefore, we require the trainee to have the basic navigation knowledge and that they understand what a navigation watch entails. We at Ecdis Ltd are of the opinion that traditional navigation techniques are still relevant in a digital world and as such we will teach the use of existing navigation skills on an ECDIS system.

Class Limitations

The Class Size is limited to twelve persons due to our opinion that training is optimised when there are twelve persons or less in the class per instructor and there are no more than two persons per ECDIS system.

Learner Conditions

ECDIS welcomes trainees that meet the entry criteria, regardless of background, culture or religion. We advocate that trainees with a variety of different backgrounds, experience, attitudes and values will enhance the course and allows the trainee to contribute to the learning experience. Trainees are therefore encouraged to arrive keen to learn and willing to offer their opinions and experience for the betterment of the course.

Trainers

All of our trainers are specialist navigators that are highly experienced in the practical use of ECDIS, having pushed such systems to their limits at sea. Combined, our trainers have taught over 1000 mariners.

Our flag state approved 5 day course is designed for candidates seeking certification as officers in charge of a navigational watch and for experienced mariners and other persons with navigational responsibilities, such as pilots.

Course can either be delivered at our eNavigation Centre, located at our headquarters in Southampton, UK, or conducted at a location of our choosing, using our mobile training suite. Both options are DNV-accredited and when conducted at our eNavigation centre, the course is also MCA-accredited.

We are able to visit you and conduct 'in house' training on your own systems, ensuring the highest level of understanding for you and your team. The flexibility of our training means that we can train you on the smallest ECDIS system for yachts, through to large groups of merchant ECDIS systems with the same high level of professionalism and integrity.
